52% Increase in Funding Starts the Foundation’s 60th Anniversary!
In its 60th year of improving lives, the Governing Committee of the Licking County Foundation recently approved $1,116,436 in grants to nonprofit organizations through unrestricted, field of interest, designated agency and agency funds. This support represents a 52% increase over 2015 grant funding, which is attributable to the establishment of new funds and partnerships with the Foundation’s donor advised funds. Since 1956, the Licking County Foundation has awarded over $44.4 million in grants and scholarships to dedicated nonprofits and deserving students through generations of gifts made by caring donors. The organizations receiving these grants are listed as follows.
Community Grants
Each year, the Licking County Foundation accepts proposals from area nonprofit organizations as part of a competitive grantmaking process to respond to new programs, emerging needs, and innovative services that might not be started or continue were it not for the Foundation’s support.
$619,956 in grants were awarded to 26 local nonprofit organizations through unrestricted and field of interest funds. These funds were established by compassionate donors to allow the Foundation flexibility in responding to the community’s most pressing needs and taking advantage of the best opportunities. All grant recipients are organizations that serve Licking County residents.
In 2016, these grants will support a wide variety of activities benefiting citizens of all ages, with focus given to projects or programs that provide services for underserved youth and families, including preventive and emergency dental and vision care; advocacy for child victims of violence; positive mentorship and development programs for youth; and emergency assistance for basic needs. The Foundation awarded grants totaling $163,800 (27%) to education and youth activities; $157,245 (25%) to supportive, safe and livable communities; $154,474 (25%) to human services; and $144,437 (23%) to health. Summaries of recipient organization projects grants are as follows:
Center for Disability Services: $20,000 to support Circle of Friends which offers elementary, middle and high school students with and without developmental disabilities the opportunity to gain social skills through meetings and activities that will improve academic success, daily functioning skills and job preparedness. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Fund.
Center for the Visually Impaired: $25,000 to support the Non-Senior Program which provides full, professional, basic eye care health services including exams, consultation, assessment, treatment plan, eye glasses, and follow-up on an ongoing basis to low-income individuals in Licking County from birth to age 59. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Fund.
Children's Reading Foundation of Licking County: $13,500 to support Reach Out and Read which provides brand new books to children ages 6 months to 5 years-old at their pediatric well child check ups. Granted from the Constance C. Baldwin Fund.
City of Newark: $10,603 to support the improvement of recreational facilities at Everett Avenue Park, Wells Park, and T.J. Evans Park by purchasing three swing sets, twelve swings, mulch, and concrete for the swing set posts. Granted from the Constance C. Baldwin Fund and William S. and Sue O. Moore Fund.
Habitat for Humanity-MidOhio: $10,000 to support the Homeowner Repair program to provide needed repairs to low-income homeowners affected by age, disability or family circumstances who are struggling to maintain the integrity of their homes. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking County Aging Program: $28,714 to purchase a dishwasher for Licking County Aging Program’s nutritional department which prepares approximately 1,000 lunches daily for the Meals on Wheels program. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking County Community Health Clinic: $3,387 to purchase automatic blood pressure cuffs, diabetic monitoring strips and educational pamphlets. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking County Family YMCA: $25,000 to support All For One Camp, a summer camp program designed to give children with varying abilities an opportunity to experience a traditional camp setting. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Fund.
Licking County Health Department: $29,955 to support the Licking County Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative to create a Newborn Home Visitation program, expand the capacity of the Child Passenger Safety program, and increase safe sleep training efforts. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Fund.
Licking County Humane Society: $13,000 to support a full-time Volunteer Coordinator position which would be responsbile for training, feedback, acknowledgement and support of the organization’s 1,000+ volunteers. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking County Job and Family Services: $32,760 to support the employment of a Registered Nurse to manage medical assessments and reports for youth involved with Children Services. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking County Library: $38,642 to support a Library-In-A Box located at Central Ohio Technical College – Pataskala to provide 24/7 public library service to western Licking County. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Licking Memorial Hospital: $63,565 to support the Licking Memorial Dental Clinic for Children, providing access to preventive dental care and education for the uninsured children of Licking County's low-income families; and Kid's Place, an accredited child advocacy center that provides a safe and comfortable environment for the investigation and treatment of children who are suspected to have suffered neglect, physical abuse and/or sexual abuse. Granted from the Ernestine and John David Spencer Memorial Fund and the William E. and Annie S. Miller Fund.
Look Up Ministries: $22,530 to support the Look Up Dental Clinic, providing free urgent dental care needs to uninsured, low-income residents of Licking County. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Mental Health America of Licking County: $75,000 to support the general operations of the organization which provides free prevention services throughout the county to vulnerable members of our population with mental illness, including youth and those living in poverty. Granted from the Constance C. Baldwin Fund and the William E. and Annie S. Miller Fund.
Mid-Ohio Foodbank: $5,000 to support fresh produce acquisition for the expansion of the Food Pantry Network of Licking County's Produce Market program. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Newark Midland Theatre Association: $25,000 to support the 2015-2016 Arts for All programs, a compilation of arts and cultural events that engage young people and families, including individuals who are striving to improve their life situations. Granted from the Constance C. Baldwin Fund and the J.P.Shai, II Fund.
Newark Rotary Club Foundation: $20,000 to support the enhancement of Rotary Park (Newark) through needed surface and equipment upgrades. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Fund.
Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra: $5,300 to support the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony, Newark-Granville Chamber Strings, and The Overture Project for the 2015-2016 season. Granted from the J.P.Shai, II Fund.
Newborns In Need: $3,000 to fund the purchase of fabric, yarn, and other materials for making a variety of handcrafted care necessities to serve premature and newborn babies who are sick or at risk for not meeting basic needs. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Fund.
Ohio Campus Compact: $15,000 to support the Pay it Forward initiative, an innovative course-based service-learning program that engages Ohio college students in hands-on philanthropy, grant-making, and volunteer service to develop a new generation of philanthropists while providing community nonprofits with much needed assistance. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Ohio State Legal Services Association: $25,000 to support the Children's Legal Assistance Project which provides legal help for low-income families with children (ages 3 to 18), including children with learning and other disabilities that may have been a barrier to their success in school and that may have put them at risk of entering or being placed in the juvenile justice system. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Fund.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio: $10,000 to support the Helping Hands program, designed to support nights of rest for families of seriously-ill children from Licking County staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Granted from the Alice McFadden and Jack Barnett Fund and the Unrestricted Fund.
The Salvation Army: $50,000 to support the daily operations of The Salvation Army Emergency Homeless Shelter in Licking County which meets the needs of single men, women and families who are homeless and living in the local area. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
Utica Parks and Recreation Improvement Committee: $25,000 to support the rebuilding and renovation of Miller Park (Utica), including playground equipment, tennis/basketball courts and shelter houses. Granted from the Constance C. Baldwin Fund and the Marguerite Halpine Heppenstall Fund.
The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology: $25,000 to support the establishment of Flight Lab, a permanent exhibit and education programs honoring Newark's aviation pioneer, Jerrie Mock. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
