In the first quarter of 2020, the Governing Committee of the Licking County Foundation approved $1,362,139 in 129 grants to nonprofit organizations from charitable funds established by generations of caring donors who have invested in the future of the community they love.
“For more than 60 years, generous donors from every walk of life have made a difference and changed the lives of their neighbors,” shared Foundation Director, Connie Hawk. “These grants would not be possible without them.”
“Licking County nonprofits are working incredibly hard every day to make life better in our community,” says Cynthia Menzer, Chairman of the Licking County Foundation Governing Committee. “We are proud to support these organizations and the vital work they do to help us achieve our mission of improving the quality of life for all citizens of Licking County.”
The following grants were made from discretionary and non-discretionary funding resources, and will enhance almost every aspect of life in Licking County—including education; arts and culture; housing; youth, seniors and families; animal welfare; health and human services; parks and recreation; economic development; safe neighborhoods; the environment; and more.
Amy Dell, Licking County Foundation Program Officer, recognizes that many organizations are adjusting how they provide services during the pandemic.
“The Foundation is working with our current grant partners about how and when they carry out their funded programs,” noted Dell. “We want to make sure organizations are able to continue serving people in need, and acknowledge that these uncertain times and circumstances call for flexibility.”
CAPITAL, COMMUNITY, EVENTS SPONSORSHIP & STRATEGIC GRANTS: $395,637 in 31 discretionary grants were awarded from unrestricted funds created by donors to allow the Foundation flexibility in responding to the community’s most urgent needs and emerging opportunities; and from field of interest funds created by donors to provide ongoing support to a particular field, broad purpose, geographic area, specific cause or issue.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Licking and Perry Counties: $20,000 to expand school-based programming for students in Newark City Schools, allowing Bigs and Littles to meet in school where these children already are striving toward their potential.
Buckeye Valley Family YMCA: $25,000 to support the All For One Camp, an inclusive summer day camp, which welcomes children with many types of developmental disabilities to participate in a traditional camp environment.
Central Ohio Technical College and The Ohio State University at Newark: $675 to support One Book One Community book club.
Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools of Licking County: $25,000 to support a six-week summer enrichment program, which provides books, training, stipends for staff members, field trips, classroom and administrative supplies, and two healthy meals and a snack daily.
City of Newark: $500 to support planting annual flowers at City Hall in memory of Bill and Sue Moore; and $7,425 to enhance the disc golf course at Everett Park to attract more players and increase usage at the course.
Columbus Council on World Affairs: $6,000 to increase Licking County participation to 200 students annually in the Global Scholars Diploma program for enriching learning experiences through community partnerships.
The Dawes Arboretum: $10,000 to support an exhibition of 60 wind sculptures by Lyman Whitaker, the world’s most recognized creator of kinetic art in the world, on the arboretum’s central grounds.
Fostering Further: $350 to support the Murder Mystery Dinner.
Girl Scouts of Ohio's Heartland: $6,000 to support the Community Outreach program for helping connect girls in Licking County to the programs and activities of this chapter.
Historic Hudson Community Association: $7,000 to support the Hudson Avenue Sidewalk Replacement project for reducing the cost to individual homeowners and improving walkability and overall neighborhood revitalization for the Historic Hudson Avenue area.
Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities: $25,000 to support the unmet needs of children with developmental disabilities in Licking County.
Licking County Center for Visual Impairments (LCCVI): $30,000 to support the Non-Senior Eye Care Services Program, which provides the full spectrum of professional eye care services for eligible Licking County residents under the age of 60; and the Low Vision Aids Program, which provides resources beyond prescribed glasses.
Licking County Community Center for 60+ Adults: $10,000 to support programs and services that connect and engage older adults and combat feelings of isolation, depression and loneliness; activities include shared meals, exercise classes and arts programming.
Licking County Community Health Clinic: $7,500 to purchase prescriptions for low-income clinic consumers who otherwise could not afford vital medications.
Licking County HOPE: $7,500 to support CASA of Licking County which works with the Juvenile Court of Licking County to provide volunteers who serve as advocates for children who have been removed from their homes due to neglect, abuse or dependency issues.
Licking County Humane Society: $8,000 to support programs and veterinary care for the four-legged citizens of Licking County.
Licking County Jail Ministries: $25,000 to support general operating expenses for the Vertical 196 Hope Center, a daytime drop-in and resource program for adults who are homeless, recovering from addiction, or in re-entry.
Licking Memorial Health Systems: $20,000 to support the Children's Dental Clinic and Food Prescription Program, both of which serve uninsured, low-income children in Licking County; and $1,687 to support flower gardens and other horticultural projects in memory of Katharyn Wickham Shannon.
The Main Place: $500 to support the Glenn Hopkins Memorial St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run & Walk.
Mental Health America of Licking County: $20,000 to support programs that serve youth, including prevention, early intervention, and other support to address the mental and behavioral health of children, youth and families.
Mental Health and Recovery for Licking and Knox Counties: $5,000 to support "Not So Different," a film about local services, harm reduction, and the effects of stigma on addiction and mental illness in the community.
Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra: $20,000 to support Community Outreach programs for youth that not only provide exposure to music but also enhance skills such as teamwork, discipline, and creative problem-solving among local students.
Newark Midland Theatre Association: $30,000 to support the Arts For All and Yellow Bus Series programs, which are arts and cultural events that engage young people and families, including individuals who are striving to improve their life situations.
Ohio State Legal Services Association: $10,000 to support the Children's Legal Assistance Program in Licking County through Southeastern Ohio Legal Services (SEOLS), providing legal help for low-income families with children ages 3-18, including children with learning and other disabilities that may have been a barrier to their success in school.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio: $10,000 to support the Helping Hands program, designed to provide nights of rest for families of seriously-ill children from Licking County staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus.
St. Vincent Haven: $15,000 to support capacity building for this organization which provides emergency shelter, an increasingly critical service in Licking County.
Warrior Mediation Foundation/Save A Warrior: $10,000 to support construction and renovation of the S/SGT Dick Wood Warrior Village.
Weathervane Playhouse: $7,500 to support Main Stage Production expenses, Children’s Theater leadership and programming, and housing for actors and technicians.
The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology: $25,000 to support the Canal Street capital improvement project, including traffic redirection, a pedestrian corridor, parking enhancements for safe bus/van drop-offs, handicap parking, a covered sidewalk at museum entrance, and more.
AGENCY & DESIGNATED AGENCY GRANTS: $920,782 in 76 donor-designated grants were awarded from agency funds created by local charitable organizations to provide ongoing support for operations and programs; and from and designated agency funds created by donors to provide permanent, continuous support to particular nonprofit organizations or programs.
