LCF Donor Profile – Horns Hill Park Improvement Fund

Horns Hill Park has been a staple in the community for over 100 years. Acquired by the city of Newark back in September 1910, the land is considered the flagship of Newark’s park system. In 1934, the park became more accessible with trails, shelters and bathrooms. By 1936, close to 25,000 individuals from Ohio and beyond visited Horns Hill Park. Today, Horns Hill Park is just as much a gathering spot for families as it was a century ago. Complete with shelters, walking trails and a playground area, the park is a great for picnicking, hiking, a quiet drive or more recently—downhill mountain biking!

Completing the biking trail project is the dream of Newark resident Bob Bevard. Mountain biking attracts nearly 40 million participants annually nationwide. The improvements at Horns Hill Park grew out of Bob’s passion to develop the mountain biking trails into a destination venue for mountain bike enthusiasts of all ages and abilities, from across the state and beyond. Bob’s vision led him to establish the Horns Hill Park Improvement Fund in partnership with the City of Newark at Licking County Foundation. Bob made the initial donation to the fund.

The Horns Hill Park improvement team is currently working on several more trails within the park. Through more donations, Bob and his colleagues hope to add an access trail and kiosk information center, as well as further improve and extend the existing trails. A retired teacher, Bob noted his passion for this project stems from his 25 years of experience with mountain biking. He believes that “mountain biking is a life changing sport. There is comradery, kinships, fresh air and plenty of exercise.” He also believes that this park is a very positive element to have within our community, and that it will attract families and riders alike.
